The Oct. 25 article, “Display represents work-zone deaths,” should be an eye-opener to all drivers.
I always wondered if it was necessary to slow down to 50 mph when posted, even though there were no workers present. I finally called the Ohio Highway Patrol and was told that whether or not workers are present, the posted limit should be followed.
Following that speed limit in work zones is quite a challenge. Everyone streaks past me, honking and sending “salutes” to me. It’s time to remember that posted speed limits are not just suggestions.
If Toledo, Lucas County, or Ohio want to balance their budgets, along with protecting workers and travelers, ticket these reckless drivers.

Are pipes source of lake pollution?
Recently, my wife and I took a drive through the western Ohio countryside. We noticed a field with dozens of trenches and large coils of yellow plastic hose in preparation for installation.
Is this something that has been done on a large scale for years? I wonder how many nutrients are leaching into these pipes, into drainage ditches, eventually leading to Lake Erie? How many farm fields would have to be taken out of production to stem the pollution entering our drinking water source? How much larger is the problem than we realize? Does the definition of conundrum apply?
