I have been a volunteer for more than five years at the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio (CCNO) near Stryker (“Dollars and sense,” editorial, Oct. 23). Volunteering has been rewarding, helping inmates who come from six jurisdictions: Lucas, Defiance, Fulton, Henry, and Williams counties and the City of Toledo.
CCNO is a clean, safe, and secure facility. I appreciate the well-trained, cooperative officers when I am there for Catholic group Bible study and a storybook reading project for female inmates who are mothers. Many years of service have been offered by my fellow volunteers.
CCNO is a model for other correctional facilities. I hope and pray that Lucas County officials will support continued participation in CCNO.

Pope’s change is far from good
In response to Keith C. Burris’ Oct. 17 commentary “Pope Francis is the change”: Not all change is good, and in this case, it’s evil.
Should we celebrate exchanging the plain teaching of the Bible for what sounds more loving? We should not. Should we pretend that Jesus Christ is OK with sexual immorality in His church? We should not.
Is it wise to place political correctness above moral excellence? No, it is unwise.
The Pope is exchanging the truth of God for a lie. God made people to be attracted to the opposite sex. The lie of man is that God made people to be homosexual. That’s the god of people’s imagination, and he doesn’t exit.
I’m not a homophobe, nor a spiritually proud do-gooder. I am a Christian who is willing to stand up for God’s word.

Muslim leaders have spoken out
The writer of the Oct. 18 Readers’ Forum letter “Why don’t Muslim leaders speak out?” asserts that our world will become safer and more peaceful when community leaders of the Muslim faith in northwest Ohio issue strong statements that condemn atrocities committed by Islamic fundamentalists. The writer claims that Muslim community leaders have failed to issue such condemnations.
The writer should read past issues of The Blade, which has allowed Muslim community leaders in Toledo to voice very strong condemnations against all forms of terrorism.
The Toledo community would be more peaceful if false accusations weren’t blindly issued, and people adhered to and respected the facts.

UAW local leader is a true authority
The writer of the Oct. 11 Readers’ Forum letter “UAW local leader not an authority” should rethink his advice that the news media should not be so quick to interview Bruce Baumhower about the possibility of Jeep Wrangler production leaving Toldeo.
No one is more of an authority on Jeep than Mr. Baumhower. His many years in Chrysler’s Toledo Jeep assembly plant, plus his years as president of United Auto Workers Local 12, make him very much an authority.
