I thank Blade Editor David Kushma for his Aug. 9 op-ed column, “Obama’s Clean Power Plan will help Ohio and the world — if we let it.” As a Unitarian Universalist, I believe that all life is interconnected. We all must care for our environment so that it may sustain life for generations to come.
Pope Francis has called on all people of good will to protect creation, and specifically to care for the climate. His encyclical reminds us that the world’s poor bear the brunt of the climate crisis, which has been caused primarily by wealthy developed nations.
As Americans and as people of faith, we take this call to heart and urge our country to become a leader in solving global warming and building a new clean-energy economy.
Making President Obama’s clean-energy plan work is something we must support, for the benefit of our planet and future generations.

County taxpayers getting squeezed
In response to your Aug. 10 article “Close encounters with bears, tigers, new hippo area in zoo’s big plans”: I am concerned that I and my fellow Lucas County taxpayers will be taxed to the point where many households will go broke. The zoo is asking for tax money, and it is one of many public bodies that seek more taxpayer support.
The Toledo Zoo and other public agencies are fine. But it seems to be an ongoing problem that whenever money is needed, agencies go to taxpayers. It’s time to stop and look at where our taxes are spent.

Where are users of Promenade Park?
All the people who complain about ProMedica’s plan to build a parking garage in Promenade Park must not be using the park while they can (“ProMedica garage plan moves forward; Critics again voice their opposition,” Aug. 13).
My husband and I walk on the opposite side of the Maumee River five to seven days a week. We look across the river to Promenade Park and see only a few people walking or jogging during their lunch hour.
I welcome ProMedica, its parking garage, and all the good changes ProMedica’s presence downtown could mean for Toledo.

Column points out nuclear deterrence
S. Amjad Hussain’s Aug. 3 op-ed column, “Israel worries unnecessarily over nuclear deal with Iran,” mentioned that Israel in all likelihood has nuclear weapons. Those weapons, along with the continued support of our country, will deter nuclear aggression against Israel.
