To the editor: Amazon not worth effort for Toledo

As if it’s not bad enough that our states and cities pony up for big retailers like Wal-Mart, now we also have the online giant Amazon looking to cash in on corporate welfare.

Amazon’s search for a second headquarters site is nothing more than a money grab at taxpayers’ expense. But then their strategy has always been to finance their growth through public subsidies.

Toledo would be better served to invest our hard-earned local tax dollars in local businesses that give back to our community.

Haven’t we seen enough of Sykes?

Larry Sykes’ latest run in with the law is just another in a long line of bullying (Oct. 21, “Democrats back Sykes after arrest for assault”). It has happened on the school board and city council.

How can the Democrats still endorse him, and how can council still let him serve?

Gun lovers have constitutional rights

The Second Amendment to the Constitution protects the right of the people to keep and bear arms and was adopted on Dec. 15, 1791, as part of the first 10 amendments (Oct. 23, “Gun lovers: Read the Constitution” Oct. 23)

The Supreme Court has ruled that the right belongs to individuals, while also ruling that the right is not unlimited and does not prohibit all regulation of either firearms or similar devices.

General Kelly adding to lies

White House Chief of Staff John Kelly was pressed into service to clean up after President Trump again offended and attacked representatives of a Gold Star family. He then attacked Florida Rep. Frederica Wilson, a close family friend of Sgt. La David Johnson, one of four Special Forces troops killed in action in Niger.

General Kelly stated that Ms. Wilson listened in to the personal phone call between Mr. Trump and Sergeant Johnson’s wife. The President called Mrs. Johnson while she, her mother-in-law, and the congressman were traveling in a car together. The call was on speakerphone.

The general said Ms. Wilson bragged about her role in securing funds for an FBI building in Miramar, Fla. A video proves he is wrong. In fact, she wasn’t even in Congress when the building was funded.

The frequent fabrication of events by the Trump Administration is alarming and the cumulative effect of those lies is destructive.
