Wilk struggles in return from DL as Mud Hens fall

INDIANAPOLIS -- Toledo starting pitcher Adam Wilk struggled in his return from the disabled list yesterday as the Indianapolis Indians completed a four-game sweep of the Mud Hens with a 6-2 victory at Victory Field.

The Indians scored four runs in the third inning to knock Toledo starter Adam Wilk from the game after just 21⁄₃ innings.

Wilk (8-6), who was placed on the DL for an elbow injury in mid-August, faced the minimum number of batters in the first and second innings but immediately ran into trouble in the third.

Indianapolis' Eric Fryer reached base on a throwing error by shortstop Audy Ciriaco to lead off the third. Miles Durham followed with a single, and Gorkys Hernandez reached base on a bunt.

Pedro Ciriaco drew a bases-loaded walk to score Fryer, and Durham scored on a Brian Bocock sacrifice fly. Jordy Mercer then hit a single to center field, scoring Hernandez and Ciriaco and giving the Indians a 4-0 lead.

Toledo managed to cut the deficit to 4-1 in the fourth after Andy Dirks smacked a lead-off double to right field and scored on a Danny Worth single.

But Indianapolis (74-66) struck again in the fourth with an RBI single by Pedro Ciriaco and in the fifth when Mercer smacked a solo home run to left field.

Both runs were charged to reliever Jose Ortega.

Indians starter Jeff Locke struck out eight and allowed just one run on three hits in seven dominant innings to earn his first career Triple-A victory.

In the eighth, Toledo's Jeff Salazar hit a one-out double to right field off of Indians reliever Garrett Olson. Salazar went to third on a single by Audy Ciriaco and scored on a sacrifice fly by Omir Santos.

Carlos Guillen, in a rehab assignment from Detroit, went 0-3 with a strikeout, snapping his 10-game Triple-A hitting streak.

After an off day Thursday, the Hens (65-75) travel to Columbus for two games before wrapping up the season at Fifth Third Field with two games against the Clippers.
