Ohio State upset by Spartans on late field goal

COLUMBUS — Ottawa Hills graduate Michael Geiger ended Ohio State's perfect season Saturday with a 41-yard field goal as time expired.

Michigan State drove 25 yards in the last 4:07 after an OSU punt to set up the winning field goal.

The result left an Ohio Stadium record crowd — 108,975 — in stunned silence.

MSU entered the final quarter down 14-7 but tied the score with 12:03 to play on a 2-yard touchdown run by Gerald Holmes.

The Buckeyes play at Michigan next Saturday.

THIRD QUARTER: Ohio State finally got the big play it needed to take a 14-7 lead after three quarters.

After five consecutive possessions ended with punts, the Buckeyes were the recipient of the game's biggest momentum swing.

Michigan State's Macgarrett Kings muffed a punt deep in OSU territory that Ohio State recovered at the 6-yard line. J.T. Barrett threw a touchdown pass to Jalin Marshall on the next play to give the second-ranked Buckeyes a 14-7 lead over No. 9 Michigan State with 3:33 left in the qjuarter.

Both OSU touchdowns have come off Michigan State turnovers.

Through three quarters, Ohio State only has 105 yards of offense.

HALFTIME: Another week, another slow start for Ohio State.

The second-ranked Buckeyes and No. 9 Michigan State are tied 7-7 at halftime.

Ohio State gained 75 yards — less than three yards per play — and had three first downs in the half.

OSU's lone touchdown came early in the second quarter when Ezekiel Elliott scored from 1-yard out on 4th and goal.

J.T. Barrett was ruled down at the half-yard line on second down after the play was initially ruled a touchdown. Then Elliott was stuffed at the goal line on third down before plowing through the MSU defensive line on fourth down.

Elliott has 30 yards rushing and a touchdown on 10 carries. Barrett is just 5 of 9 for 29 yards.

Michigan State backup quarterback Tyler O'Connor engineered an impressive nine-play, 75-yard scoring drive that culminated with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Trevon Pendleton.

It looked like the Spartans would take the lead after benefiting from an uncharacteristically poor punt by Cameron Johnston. The ball went off Johnston's ankle as he punted deep in OSU territory. Michigan State took over at the OSU 23-yard line, but only went backwards.

Ottawa Hills graduate Michael Geiger missed a 43-yard field goal, his first miss from beyond 40 yards this season.

O'Connor, playing in place of injured starter Connor Cook, is 6 of 8 for 83 yards and a touchdown.

FIRST QUARTER: A driving rain storm has rendered the Big Ten's best immobile.

No. 2 Ohio State and ninth-ranked Michigan State are scoreless after one quarter in Columbus. The skies opened with forecasted rain showers just as the game kicked off.

The teams combined for five first downs and only 82 total yards.

Ohio State defensive end Sam Hubbard set the Buckeyes up with a short field when he caused Michigan State quarterback Damion Terry to fumble on a sack late in the quarter. Adolphus Washington recovered at the MSU 32-yard line.

The Buckeyes ended the quarter on the MSU 13.

Tyler O'Connor started at quarterback for Michigan State in place of the injured Connor Cook, who suffered a shoulder injury last week. Terry also took snaps behind center.
