The Tigers will open spring training on Feb. 13, which means baseball season is coming. Here is a daily look at players with possible ties to the 2018 Mud Hens, whose home opener is set for April 12 vs. Pawtucket.
IF Dawel Lugo
History: The Tigers received Lugo and two other young players from Arizona in trade for OF J.D. Martinez last season. This native of the Dominican Republic began last season in Double-A with Jackson in the Southern League and batted .282 with seven homers and 43 RBIs in 88 games before the trade. Lugo was sent to Double-A Erie and hit .269 there with six homers and 22 RBIs in 43 games. Most notably Lugo, a shortstop early in his career, also saw time at second base and third base as well as shortstop for the SeaWolves.

Future: The 23-year-old Lugo will get a long look in spring training, but it is expected he will begin this season with the Mud Hens. The bigger question is whether he will stay at third base, where he has spent the majority of his time the past two seasons, or continue to work at second, a switch Detroit put into effect in Erie after the trade.
