The Tigers will open spring training on Feb. 13, which means baseball season is coming. Here is a daily look at players with possible ties to the 2018 Mud Hens, whose home opener is set for April 12 against Pawtucket.
RHP Artie Lewicki
History: The Tigers drafted Lewicki in the eighth round of the 2014 draft, and he has risen quickly through the Detroit minor-league system. He pitched at three different levels last year, including four September appearance with the Tigers when he went 0-1 with a 6.10 ERA. Lewicki began the season with Double-A Erie and was 9-4 with a 3.76 ERA; after a promotion to the Mud Hens he caught fire, posting a 5-0 record and 2.03 ERA in five starts. For the season Lewicki led all Tigers minor leaguers with 14 victories and ranked fifth in strikeouts (123) and ninth in ERA (3.38).
Future: While Lewicki is not considered one of Detroit’s top prospects, it is hard to ignore his numbers from last season. The Tigers will give the University of Virginia product a chance to make their staff; if that does not happen, the 25-year-old should start for the Hens.
