Hunt 2nd in offensive rookie of year honors

MINNEAPOLIS — In a year featuring outstanding rookie running backs, the New Orleans Saints’ Alvin Kamara won The Associated Press 2017 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award Saturday at the NFL Honors show.

Kamara, a third-round draft pick from Tennessee, beat another third-rounder, Kansas City running back Kareem Hunt, in balloting by a nationwide panel of 50 media members who regularly cover the league. Kamara, selected 19 spots ahead of Hunt, received 28 votes to 21 for Hunt. Houston rookie quarterback Deshaun Watson, despite playing in only seven games before a season-ending knee injury, got the other vote.

Kamara shared duties with veteran Mark Ingram as the Saints won the NFC South. He rushed for 728 yards with a 6.1-yard average, and scored eight times. He also caught 81 passes for 826 yards, with five touchdowns.

Hunt, who left Toledo as the school’s all-time leading rusher, turned heads starting with a standout performance in the first week of the season as the Chiefs won at defending champion New England. Hunt went on to lead the NFL in rushing yards as a rookie with 1,327 yards and scored eight touchdowns.

Hunt had six 100-plus yard rushing games, including a season-high 172 yards in a Week 3 win against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Hunt got an opportunity as the featured back for the Chiefs, when presumed starter Spencer Ware suffered a season-ending injury in the preseason.

At Toledo, Hunt was a three-time All-Mid-American Conference selection and had 4,945 rushing yards. Hunt earned Most Outstanding Player for the North team at the Senior Bowl after rushing 15 times for 118 yards.
