NASCAR agrees to acquire Temperance-based ARCA

NASCAR has agreed to acquire the Temperance-based Automobile Racing Club of America, the sanctioning bodies announced Friday.

ARCA, which owns the Toledo Speedway and the track in Flat Rock, Mich., traditionally has served as a talent pipeline for NASCAR. Young drivers often begin their professional stock car racing careers in the ARCA Racing Series with the aim of moving up to one of NASCAR’s national series.

NASCAR and ARCA billed the acquisition as a measure of strengthening the state of stock car racing in the United States.

“We are proud of the history and tradition of the ARCA Racing Series and the relationship we’ve built over six decades with NASCAR,” ARCA president Ron Drager said in a statement. “We look forward to the opportunity to be more fully integrated with NASCAR and help shape the future of our sport.”

ARCA began its 66th season earlier this year, and its series competes at many of the same tracks as NASCAR’s biggest races, including Daytona International Speedway. The series competed at Talladega Superspeedway on Friday.

The agreement calls for ARCA to operate as it stands through the 2019 season.

Jim France, NASCAR’s vice chairman and executive vice president, helped oversee the merger of American Le Mans Series and GRAND-AM in 2012, creating the modernized International Motor Sports Association two years later.

“Our NASCAR family has long had a special connection with our friends at ARCA, and this is a logical step in demonstrating our commitment to the next generation of racers,” France said in a statement. “This continues the legacy our sport was built upon and will deliver the great racing our fans expect.”

This year’s ARCA Menards 200 at Toledo Speedway will take place May 20.
