`Swing' to open for five shows at Stranahan

Swing, the original Broadway musical, runs Friday-Sunday in the Stranahan Theater, 4645 Heatherdowns Blvd. The show, which features more than 30 dance numbers, was nominated for six Tony Awards, including best new musical, best director, best choreography, and best orchestrations. Tickets are $29.50 and $38.50.

Also in the theater: “The Live Out Loud” tour featuring Steven Curtis Chapman will be staged at 7 p.m. Monday. Tickets are $24 and $27.

Eight performances have been added to the run of the Phantom of the Opera, playing Dec. 26-Jan. 19. Tickets range from $20 to $65.

Leif Garrett, the '70s teen idol, and his band, F8, will take the stage about 10:30 tonight in Mickey Finn's Pub, 602 Lagrange St. The T-Shirts open at 9:30 p.m. Cover is $10. Alternative music by High on Fire and Jucifer & Shuttlecock will play Friday; the Agenda, with The Holy Ghost, Treysuno & Jane Harvard will perform Saturday; on Sunday, Crawdaddy's Blues Jam takes the stage at 8 p.m.

Shock rocker Alice Cooper's “Descent Into Dragontown” tour will be staged at 8 p.m. tomorrow in the SeaGate Convention Centre, 402 Jefferson Ave. Tickets are $30.50 and $38.50 from the box office, 419-321-5007, and Ticketmaster.

Also at the center, the Average White Band will headline a night of food, dance, and fun Saturday to benefit the Toledo Repertoire Theatre. The evening begins at 7 and lasts until midnight. Tickets are $50. Information, 419-539-7600.

Paul Anka will be in concert at 7 p.m. Sunday in the Ritz Theatre, 30 South Washington St., Tiffin. Tickets range from $46 to $70 from the box office, 419-448-8544, ext. 2.

Two-time Grammy winner Kathy Mattea will take the stage at 8 p.m. tomorrow in the Franciscan Center of Lourdes College, 6832 Convent Blvd., Sylvania. Tickets are $35, $33 for seniors, and $15 for students 16 and under from the box office, 419-824-3999.

The sixth annual Black Swamp Blues Society's Battle of the Blues will hold competition finals at 7 p.m. Sunday in the Ohio Theatre, 3114 Lagrange St. Finalists will be Laurie Swyers & the Blue Sun, Blues Messengers, Robert “Blacksheep” Lamb, Pat Lewandowski, Josh Boyd & the VIP Band, Johnny Reed & the Houserockers, and Two Man Wrecking Crew.

Blue Suit Productions will present “Screaming & Crying About The Blues,” an educational conference on the blues, at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Macomber Building, 1501 Monroe St. Lectures, workshops, blues films, and a photography exhibition will be featured. Keynote speaker will be Jim O'Neal. Cost is $5. At 7 p.m. a concert with Eddie Kirkland, Big Joe Duskin, Dave Ray, Jason Ringenberg, and Calvin Cooke is scheduled; cost is $15 in advance from Boogie Records and $18 at the door.

The sixth annual Edgefest is scheduled tomorrow through Saturday in Ann Arbor. This year's festival features bands led by the world's cutting-edge saxophonists and swing chamber jazz. Edgefest takes place in the Kerrytown Concert House, Workbench Furniture in the Kerrytown Market District, and the Firefly Club in the Main Street area.
