Special events: dedication of Skyway bridge slated Saturday

Special events: dedication of Skyway bridge slated Saturday

The Dedication Ceremony for the Veterans Glass City Skyway Bridge

is scheduled at 10:30 a.m. Saturday on the northbound deck. At 12:30 p.m., units from numerous veterans organizations will lead a motorized parade across the bridge. A four-mile walk and road race held in conjunction with the dedication begins at noon. Hosted by the Toledo Roadrunners, the race will start and finish at the Riverside YMCA on Summit Street and cross the new bridge. Registration fees and donations will benefit the worker’s memorial planned near the bridge. Spectators must board shuttle buses, beginning at 8 a.m., at the casting yard on Front Street or the Riverside Y to attend the ceremony or view the bridge.

The Crosby Festival of the Arts

runs from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday in Toledo Botanical Garden, 5403 Elmer Dr. The juried fine arts show features new artists as well as returning favorites, children’s activities, music, and food.

Bike to the Bay

takes place this weekend to benefit multiple sclerosis research. Riders will begin and complete routes at the Lucas County fairground in Maumee. The tour offers a one-way route, which is 35 miles on Saturday only, and two-day 50, 75, and 100 mile routes with a stopover at Port Clinton High School. The tour includes catered lunches and several rest stops along the scenic back roads of northwest Ohio.

Tchaikovsky’s ballet The Sleeping Beauty will be performed at 7 p.m. tomorrow and Saturday in the Maumee Center for the Performing Arts at Maumee High School, 1147 Saco St., Maumee. Guest artists performing include Diana Stetsura and David Hovhannisyan.

A Disco Party Under the Stars

to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation takes place from 8 p.m. to midnight tomorrow at Centennial Terrace in Sylvania. Music will be provided by the Sounds of Music. Doors open at 7 p.m.

The Toledo Mobile Radio Association will present a demonstration of emergency communications abilities from 2 p.m. Saturday to 2 p.m. Sunday at the Wolcott House, 1031 River Rd., Maumee. The annual event, called Field Day, is the climax of the weeklong Amateur Radio Week sponsored by the ARRL, the national association for Amateur Radio. Using only generators, batteries, or solar power, the ham-radio operators will construct emergency stations in parks, shopping malls, and back yards to test their skills under all situations. The hams will be demonstrating AM, sideband, FM, digital, code and even satellite communications. More than 30,000 amateur radio operators across the country participated in last year’s event.

The Glassmen All-Star Revue

drum and bugle corps competition will be held at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the University of Toledo Glass Bowl stadium, 2801 West Bancroft St. It is the official kickoff for the corps’ eight-week national summer tour. The line-up includes five corps from around the United States and features the current DCI world champions, the Cavaliers from Rosemont, Ill. Also participating will be the Bluecoats from Canton, the Crossmen from San Antonio, Texas, Southwind from Lexington, Ky., and the Troopers from Casper, Wyo. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. The Glassmen also will present a free clinic, open to the public, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. for those interested in marching with a drum corps.

Jimmy Thackery and the Drivers

perform at 8 p.m. Sunday in Mickey Finn’s Pub, 601 Lagrange St. The band is on tour in support of blues guitarist Thackery’s latest album, "Solid Ice." e

The Bedford Flower and Garden Club hosts its annual Garden Tour from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Seven area gardens, including the Bedford Library Gardens, will be on display. Tickets can be purchased at the library, 8575 Jackman Rd., Temperance.

Comedian Charles Marshall will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Olivet Lutheran Church, 5840 Monroe St., Sylvania. Marshall says "The difference between my comedy and a lot of the clean comedy being done today is that mine is actually funny."

Focus on Fiber Arts

is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday in Sauder Village in Archbold. Artisans will demonstrate and share their love of fiber arts, turning wool, cotton, and flax into finished products. Guests can also try the traditional craft of rug hooking.

Also at the village, about 40 tinsmiths, coppersmiths, and other sheetmetal workers from across the country will come together today through Sunday during the third annual Tinsmith-Coppersmith Convergence. This is the national gathering for metal workers. Village hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday, and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.

The season’s third Rally by the River is scheduled from 6 to 9 p.m. tomorrow in Promenade Park, along the downtown riverfront. Scheduled to perform are Cincinnati cover band The Websters and DJ Richard Paton.

Detroit will host River Days Festival along the new River Walk starting tomorrow and culminating with the 49th annual Target Fireworks Wednesday. The six-day festival features three stages, interactive games, and exhibitions.
