Man struck while standing on Michigan road

MONROE -- A Newport, Mich., man was seriously injured when he was struck by a vehicle Monday night while standing on War Road in Monroe County’s Frenchtown Township, authorities said.

Nathan Long, 20, was taken to Oakwood Southshore Medical Center in Trenton, Mich., according to Michigan State Police. He was listed in critical condition, a hospital spokesman said Tuesday morning.

Mr. Long was standing in an unlit area near the center line of War south of Newport Road about 10 p.m. when he was struck by a northbound car driven by Brianna Roberts, 17, of Newport, who had failed to see him, police said. Mr. Long was thrown onto the southbound lane, coming to rest near the shoulder.
