Greyhound to pull in on June 15

Local transportation officials’ goal of having intercity Greyhound buses and Amtrak trains stop in the same Toledo location will become reality in about two weeks.

Greyhound Lines will move its 24 daily bus trips that stop in Toledo to Central Union Terminal from downtown bus station June 15, said Laneesha Gipson, a Greyhound spokesman, last week.

“This was a vision when we renovated that facility. It’s nice that it’s finally coming to fruition,” said Paul Toth, president of the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority.

Amtrak has for many years operated bus service into Michigan that connected with its trains stopping in Toledo.

But the port authority’s hope for Greyhound to move in was thwarted for many years by the bus line’s long-term lease for its bus station at Jefferson Avenue and Michigan Street and the layout of bus bays built when the port authority renovated the train station 20 years ago.

Buses using those bays had to back out onto Emerald Avenue, and Greyhound policy forbids its buses to back out onto public streets.

With Greyhound’s downtown lease expiring this year, the port authority spent about $500,000 to modify the train station, most visibly by building four bus bays along Emerald and creating a new bus counter and office in what had been storage space on the ground floor.

As part of its 10-year lease, Greyhound will reimburse $212,000 of that cost over five years.

Three of the bus bays will normally be used by Greyhound, while the fourth generally will be used by Amtrak’s buses and Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority bus routes that pass by the depot, near Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Plaza.

The project includes modifying space on the opposite side of the station’s waiting room, near the Amtrak ticket counter, for a sandwich stand, although that may not open on the same day that Greyhound moves in.

While Amtrak and Greyhound offer interline ticketing at other stations under the “Amtrak Thruway” brand, no such service will be offered immediately at Toledo.

“However, we may offer this in the future,” Ms. Gipson said.

“This is one of many locations where Greyhound is co-locating with Amtrak,” she said, “which we’re always happy to do because it not only provides seamless connectivity with multiple modes of transportation under one roof for customers, it also allows customers to have access to both Amtrak’s and Greyhound’s extensive networks, enabling them to travel to more destinations.”

Amtrak’s four daily trains through Toledo link Chicago to the west with Cleveland and either New York and Boston or Pittsburgh and Washington to the east.

Greyhound’s routes through Toledo include services to Cleveland and Chicago but also Detroit, Cincinnati, Columbus, and Indianapolis, plus cities beyond.

The Amtrak trains are all scheduled to stop between 11:30 p.m. and 6:30 a.m. Most of Greyhound’s Toledo stops occur during the daytime.

“The schedules really complement each other” and will establish a 24-hour operation at the combined bus-train station, Mr. Toth said.
