Time goes on: Uptown Maumee’s 10-foot clock finally back in operation

The clock that has been standing in uptown Maumee for 50 years is finally right more than twice a day.

Standing about 10 feet tall, the clock on East Wayne Street was repaired Wednesday thanks to efforts from the Maumee Uptown Business Association.

“I think [the clock] is a symbol from the standpoint of having a historical uptown district, and we have some buildings that go back as far as the 1800s,” association President Deb Rasmusson said. “We do a lot with beautification and restoration, so it seemed to fit with what we like to use some of our funds for.”

Ty Szumigala left his treasurer post with the business association in September for a new job in Florida, but set the wheels in motion to fix the clock months before.

“I was the one who looked at that clock and said, ‘God, we’ve got to get that fixed,’” he said. “I hate clocks that don’t work. Either take it down or fix it.”

Mr. Szumigala brought up the issue with the business association in May, and the group determined how much money they would be willing to spend to get the clock back in working order. He said the clock hasn’t been operational for probably 40 of the 50 years it’s been up.

Finding someone to service the clock proved a bit difficult. Mr. Szumigala was eventually put in touch with Fulkerson’s Jewelers and Clock Shop, who sent a repairman.

“They came out, looked at it, and said, ‘Here’s what we’ve got to do,’” Mr. Szumigala said. “They gave me some prices. We’re an older town, and to have a clock that didn’t work, we wanted to step up and make sure it got fixed if it could.”

The clock operates on two motors — one for each side — which were both replaced. Ballasts in the lighting will soon be replaced. The city also had to reconnect power to the clock.

The total cost to the Maumee Uptown Business Association will be less than $500 when all repairs are complete.

“It’s been in that spot forever,” Mr. Szumigala said. “We stepped up and wanted to see that clock working, instead of one of those clocks where you were never late if you looked at it.”

The association is a nonprofit organization that has expanded its membership over the years as more businesses have come to the city. The group also helps coordinate events such as the Maumee Summer Fair and Food Truck Fridays.
