MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY EVENTS

■ The Martin Luther King Kitchen for the Poor will hold its annual MLK Day program of speakers and music from 10 a.m. to noon at Lo Salem Baptist Church, 660 Vance St. Keynote speaker will be Bishop Darrell Sheares, pastor of Empowerment Temple Ministries; at noon there will be a symbolic march around Savage Park followed by lunch at the kitchen. ■ MLK Unity Celebration to honor the civil rights leader; the celebration, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 9 a.m. in University of Toledo’s Savage Arena. A free community lunch will follow. Keynote speaker will be Donzaleigh Abernathy, award-winning actress and daughter of civil rights icon Ralph Abernathy. The event will feature the Scott High School marching band, UT gospel choir, UT Fire Squad dance team, and students from Toledo School for the Arts, as well as recognition of MLK Scholarship recipients and scholarship awards by the African-American Leadership Council of the United Way.

■ Bowling Green State University 2017 Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., will feature keynote speaker Ty Boyd, a 2009 Construction Management and President’s Leadership Academy alumnus, at 9:30 a.m. in the Bowen-Thompson Student Union’s Lenhart Grand Ballroom, with the opening ceremony beginning at 10 a.m. The public celebration is free.

HOLIDAY SCHEDULE

Toledo, county, state, and federal government offices will be closed Monday in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr., Day, as will city offices and courts in Maumee, Perrysburg, Oregon, Sylvania.

Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles deputy registrar sites across the state and Social Security offices will be closed as well.

Schools

Most public and parochial schools and area colleges and universities will be closed or have no classes.

Public utilities

The Toledo Department of Public Utilities will be closed, but emergency service will be available to customers. Columbia Gas and Toledo Edison and its parent company, FirstEnergy, will be open.

Bus service

Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority buses will operate on a regular schedule.

Libraries

The Main Library downtown and all branches of the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library will be closed.

Trash pickup

Refuse collection will follow its regular schedule for Toledo residents; service in other communities varies.

Mail service

Post offices will be closed; mail will not be delivered.

Parking

Meter parking in downtown Toledo will be free.
