TARTA looks to replace existing property tax

TARTA looks to replace existing property tax

The new sales tax could be on November ballot if resolution is approved

The Lucas County commissioners approved a proposal Tuesday for joining the Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority and asking voters to replace the existing property tax that funds bus service with a new sales tax.

The commissioners’ action for the resolution is needed to get the sales tax request on the November ballot. The plan calls for eliminating TARTA's 2.5-mill property tax in its seven member communities and replacing it with a half-percent Lucas County-wide sales that that would also be collected in Rossford, which is a member of the transit authority.

The resolution also needs to be approved by Toledo, Waterville, Maumee, Ottawa Hills, Sylvania, Sylvania Township, and Rossford.

If the measure gets approved by the member communities and gets to voters in November and is approved, it will raise the sales tax in the county to 7.75 percent from the current 7.25 percent. It would also scale back property taxes by an amount equal to $87.20 for the owner of a $100,000 home.
