Toledo’s official temperature Wednesday has broken the record high for the date.
The temperature at Eugene F. Kranz Toledo Express Airport, the official National Weather Service reporting station for Toledo, reached 98 degrees at 3:35 p.m., according to the weather service office in Cleveland. That topped the 96-degree June 15 high from 1994.
An excessive heat warning remained in effect for southeast Michigan and Toledo-area counties along and west of I-75 in Ohio until 9 p.m. Wednesday. A heat advisory is in effect in Ottawa, Sandusky, and Seneca counties and counties east of those until 9 p.m.
Temperature records also were tied Wednesday in Youngstown (93 degrees, matching 1994), Akron-Canton (94 degrees, matching 1925), and Flint, Mich. (93 degrees, matching 1954 and 1988), while a 96-degree high at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport broke the 95-degree record set in 1952 and tied in 1954, and a 94-degree reading at Saginaw, Mich. broke a 1994 record of 93 degrees.
Toledo’s reading 28 years ago marked the start of a multiday heat wave when daily records also were set June 16-18, but as of Wednesday forecasters did not expect that history to repeat itself immediately.
While another very warm day was expected in metro Toledo on Thursday following a sultry Wednesday night, the National Weather Service said the possibility of a midday shower or thunderstorm would help limit the high to the lower 90s. Any rain would be ahead of a cool front expected to usher in somewhat cooler, but much drier, air for Friday that will set up a very pleasant weekend before more high heat arrives next week, forecasters said.
Temperatures are expected to drop overnight only to the upper 70s, with high humidity, in the Toledo area, making for very sticky sleeping weather for those who lack air conditioning or really strong fans.
