Whitehouse wins Legion state title

ATHENS, Ohio - Whitehouse Post 384 team won the American Legion state baseball tournament yesterday by sweeping a pair of games from Marysville.

Whitehouse avenged a previous loss to Marysville by posting wins of 7-3 and 3-2. The Whitehouse team, which consists of players from Anthony Wayne, Perrysburg, Bowling Green, Springfield and Elmwood high schools, went 7-1 in the tournament.

Pitcher Steve Calevro of Perrysburg, who is headed to Heidelberg College, won the first game in the finals and scored the game-winning run in the second contest.

Adam Gumpf, a Perrysburg grad who will play for Bowling Green State University, won two games in the tournament including the finale.

Alex Rutter of Bowling Green (also going to Heidelberg) hit a double that drove in three runs including the game-winner in the first game.

Andrew Foster, a senior at Bowling Green, hit a game-winning sacrifice fly to help Whitehouse clinch the title in the second game.

The team qualified for the American Legion regional tournament that begins Thursday in Midland, Mich.
