Also at the museum, at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 10, a free talk, The Many Lives of Ancient Helike, will be given by Robert Weir in the Little Theater. Weir, of the University of Windsor, has participated in excavations on the north coast of the Greek Peloponnese at Helike, a vibrant commercial and religious center for almost three thousand years (2300 BC to 400). Ancient sources recorded how a vengeful Poseidon destroyed Helike one winter's night with a catastrophic earthquake followed by a tsunami, a disaster that may have inspired Plato's fable of Atlantis a few years later. However, excavations have shown that the lore is exaggerated: Helike suffered several destructions, but it also made comebacks. Weir's talk is co-sponsored by the Archaeological Institute of America-Toledo Society.
