9th Congressional District show spotlights young artists

The Ninth Congressional District Invitational Art Exhibition, featuring the creative work of high school students, is on display through Feb. 24 in the lobby of the Fifth Third Center in One Seagate. Awards will be announced at a 4 to 6 p.m. reception Sunday, and the first-place winner will have her or his artwork displayed in the Capitol Building in Washington for a year. Runners-up will have their work shown in U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur's office. The contest, for which teachers can nominate two students per school, is presented by the Arts Commission of Greater Toledo and Congressman Kaptur, in conjunction with Oberlin College and Firelands Association of the Visual Arts. The exhibit moves to Oberlin College's Science Center, 110 Woodland Ave., Oberlin, March 5-30, with a reception from 1 to 2:30 p.m. March 11. Information: 419-254-2787.

Three workshops have been organized by the Whitehouse Arts Advisory Board. At a 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 27 class, Ann Hymel will teach how to make fused glass pendants for necklaces (fee: $38). A needle-felted scarf class taught by Conny Beard will be 6 to 8 p.m. March 20 (fee: $48). And participants will complete a 16-by-20-inch acrylic-on-canvas painting in a 6 to 9 p.m. class on April 23, taught by Brenda Clixby (fee: $40). Wooden bowls, vessels, boxes, and vases by Bud Dennis will be featured at a 6 to 8 p.m. reception Feb. 17 at Akimbo Gallery, 175 N. Main St., Bowling Green. Dennis, 86, uses turning and inlay to make objects including small, flocked jewelry boxes, some with a secret compartment. The gallery is co-owned by his daughter, Mary Dennis, and artist Susan Woodard. Performing at the reception will be traditional Irish band Toraigh. Information: 419-806-9116.

At two free sessions Friday evening, people are invited to try their hand at drawing and artistic paper cutting in the Toledo Museum of Art. Informal drawing instruction will be offered in the galleries from 7 to 10 p.m. Paper-cutting artist Mary Gaynier, will demonstrate how to make mini-paper creations from 7 to 9 p.m. in Libbey Court.

Young Dreams, Young Visions I, a display of 70 pieces created by youngsters from 5 to 21 and representing eight schools, churches, and organizations, will be exhibited at the City Diner, 4202 Monroe St., through March 31. The show was organized by the Funhouse Writers Group. Information: 419-206-3341.

An exhibit called intake and output, 22 photographs by Sedar Burns and Deb A. Davis, will open with a 2 to 4 p.m. reception Sunday and continue through April 28 in Flatlanders Art Galleries, 11993 E. U.S. 223, one mile east of Blissfield, Mich., or 8 1/2 miles west of Exit 5 off U.S. 23. Information: 517-486-4591.

Daily Painters and Artists of Northwest Ohio is a new group that's part of an online movement known as dailypainters.com. They are committed to painting and usually finishing a small piece each day, maintaining a blog, and selling works online. Their next meeting will be at 7 p.m. Feb. 22 in Findlay. Organizer Kristen Dukat of Findlay has completed nearly 200 small pieces since she began painting daily. Making art, she notes, is a solitary pursuit but it's enriched by sharing it with others. All types of artists are invited. The group can be found on Facebook at Daily Painters of Northwest Ohio and at 419-704-3486.

Pegged to the 100th anniversary of his birth, an exhibit of Bob Hines' bird, fish, and mammal illustrations opens Feb. 16 and runs through Aug. 14 in the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center in Fremont, his hometown. Mostly self taught, Hines was an artist-illustrator for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, designed the 1946-47 federal duck stamp, and illustrated more than 50 books, including some of the writings of the late Rachel Carson, and for Peter Mattheissen's Wildlife in America. Hines was a taxidermist before being hired as an artist for the Ohio Division of Wildlife in the 1940s and later moved to Washington to work for the Fish and Wildlife Service. The center is at Spiegel Grove, Fremont and hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Information: 419-332-2081.

Holly Hey's exhibit, Burning the Maples, will open with a 6:30 to 8 p.m. reception in the Diane Kidd Gallery at the Tiffin University. A faculty member at the University of Toledo, Hey will speak about her project at 7:15 p.m.. The display will continue through March 10.
