Studios, galleries, cafes to open for Art Walk

BY TAHREE LANE
BLADE STAFF WRITER

Art Walk in downtown Toledo will be 6 to 9 p.m. July 12, when nearly 30 studios, galleries, and cafes will be open. Maps and venue listings are available prior to the event at theartscommission.org.

Doodler alert: The museum seeks doodles and to that end, is supplying linen-like napkins at doodle stations, including in the Cafe and the Family Center. Doodles must be on the museum's napkins, contain family-friendly content, and the most interesting will be displayed July 27 through Sept. 20 in the downstairs Community Gallery. So what's up with this? Jennifer Bandeen, manager of the Community Gallery, spilled some red ink on a napkin and doodled it in a Japanese-style. As a member of Doodlers Anonymous (doodlersanonymous.com), Bandeen draws regularly and figured people waiting in line for their food at the Cafe could pass the time sketching on napkins. Drawings can be done in the museum or at home and submitted to a Doodle Dropbox in the museum. Ink pens are not allowed to be used in the galleries. New drawings will be accepted throughout the duration of the exhibition. Information: toledomuseum.org/exhibitions/doodle.

Bill Poceta will demonstrate glass making from 7 to 10 p.m. July 13 and 1 to 5 p.m. July 14 and 15 in the museum's Glass Pavilion.

Work by Andi Young-Newton will be part of an exhibit featuring noir, fetish, conceptual, and horror-themed pieces that opens Friday at the Collingwood Arts Center. The Walter Chapman Art Scholarships have raised $13,000 that will be used for Lourdes University art students to travel abroad. Most of that sum was raised at an auction of five of Chapman's paintings at a gala in Sylvania June 1. Chapman, 99, has painted, taught, and with his wife, Jean Chapman, operated a gallery for decades. Scholarships will be awarded when the fund accrues enough in interest earnings. Donations continue to be accepted, said Erin Szavuly, chair of the art department at Lourdes.

Call for artists: The Greater Port Clinton Area Arts Council is looking for artists to sell their wares at the fifth annual Appetite for the Arts weekend Aug. 17-19. Information: 419-354-5654 and GPCAAC@gmail.com.

Significantia, a show of paintings by Nathan Masternak, will open Monday in the gallery at the Maumee Public Library, 501 River Rd., Maumee.
