Some lawmakers want Obama to slow down GM and Chrysler restructuring; afraid of job loss

WASHINGTON Dozens of Congress members want the Obama administration to slow down the restructuring of General Motors and Chrysler, because they're worried the process could cost tens of thousands of jobs.

A group of 36 lawmakers, mostly Republican, wrote President Barack Obama to ask his administration's auto task force to slow down its work.

The lawmakers said Friday they are worried about the loss of factory jobs, shuttered car dealerships and increased car production in China. They're also concerned about the aftermath of a potential bankruptcy filing by General Motors.

Republican Rep. Steve LaTourette of Ohio said the lawmakers want Obama to "call time-out" on the task force's work. Some lawmakers were meeting with representatives of the White House on Friday.
