Safety agency calls electric cars too quiet

DETROIT — The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Monday it wants electric and hybrid vehicles to make more noise at speeds under 18 miles per hour so pedestrians can hear them.

The agency said the cars make enough noise at higher speeds to be heard.

Automakers would be able to pick their vehicles’ sounds from a range of choices.
