The End Zone: BGSU 09-02

With the start of Bowling Green's football season just days away, there's no more talk about who is starting or not starting, where the team will finish in the MAC or anything else.

The focus is where it should be: on Saturday's game at Troy. And the excitement is palpable among Falcon fans, players, coaches — even sports writers, believe it or not. It was refreshing to hear the response of senior linebacker Eugene “Champ” Fells when he was asked Monday if he was energized about the season opener.

“My heart's beating fast right now,” he said. “We've been going at it with the offensive guys [for so long], it will feel good to lay someone else out.”

Junior offensive lineman Ben Bojicic is looking forward to more than just hitting an unfamiliar face Saturday. “We're excited to show people what [this team is] capable of,” he said.

It will be interesting to see, as the season progresses, if the Falcons can surpass the expectations, just as it will be fun to watch how new quarterback Matt Schilz reacts to stepping into the shoes of Tyler Sheehan, how the receiving corps handles the task of replacing NCAA record-setter Freddie Barnes, and how all those new defenders perform in a difficult environment at Troy. But for now, the Falcons' biggest worry shouldn't be wins and losses — it should be just to play as well as they can Saturday.
