Bowling Green defeats Miami 37-12


 BOWLING GREEN -- The Bowling Green State University football team defeated Miami 37-12 at Doyt Perry Stadium today.

The Falcons ran for 252 yards on 44 carries and scored two touchdowns. Anthon Samuel finished with a career-high 171 yards on 22 carries, while John Pettigrew added 53 yards and two touchdowns -- on runs of 2 and 29 yards -- on 10 carries as BG held the ball for more than 37 minutes of the game.

Meanwhile BG quarterback Matt Schilz completed 20-of-27 passes for 235 yards and two scores, a 7-yard strike to Samuel and a 13-yard toss to Chris Gallon.

The Falcons also got a touchdown when BooBoo Gates intercepted a Zac Dysert pass and returned it 37 yards for a TD.

The Bowling Green defense limited Miami to just 256 yards of total offense, including just three yards rushing. The RedHawks lone touchdown came on a 2-yard pass from Dysert to Andy Cruse in the third quarter.

After the Falcons gave up a 2-yard TD pass from Zac Dysert to Andy Cruse with 9:17 left in the quarter, the Falcons used a six-play, 68-yard drive to score a touchdown on a 13-yard pass from Matt Schilz to Chris Gallon with 2:01 to play.

On the first play of Miami's next drive BG's BooBoo Gates intercepted a Dysert pass and returned it 37 yards for a touchdown with 1:46 left in the quarter.

The Falcons scored 10 points in the second quarter, driving 50 yards on six plays before Anthon Samuel caught a 7-yard TD pass from Matt Schilz and getting a 26-yard field goal from Stephen Stein with 3:27 left in the quarter.

BG's other score was a 2-yard TD run by John Pettigrew in the first period.

The Falcons defense has limited Miami to just 100 yards of total offense, including just 10 yards rushing. The RedHawks' Kaleb Patterson has made two field goals, one of 36 yards in the first quarter and a 44-yard boot with just 1:37 left before halftime.

The RedHawks scored first, driving 56 yards on 11 plays before settling for a 36-yard field goal Kaleb Patterson with 10:24 left in the quarter.

The Falcons responded with an 11-play, 61-yard touchdown drive that John Pettigrew capped with a 2-yard TD plunge with 5:32 left in the period.
