Falcons sail past Bobcats in Athens

10 players score for Bowling Green

ATHENS, Ohio — The Bowling Green State University women’s basketball team cruised to an easy win in its first road Mid-American Conference game of the season, blasting Ohio University 67-41 at the Convocation Center.

All 10 players who saw action for the Falcons scored as BG improved to 12-5 overall and 3-1 in the MAC. Northview High School product Miriam Justinger led the way with 13 points, while Anthony Wayne High School grad Allison Papenfuss nearly posted a double-double with nine points and a game-high seven rebounds.

Kiyanna Black scored 14 points to lead the Bobcats (5-11, 0-4), who also got 11 from Symone Lyles and 10 from Erin Bailes.

Justinger scored eight points in the first six minutes as the Falcons rolled to an early 12-3 advantage. Ohio cut the deficit to 13-10 with 11:50 on the clock, only to see Chrissy Steffen make a 3-pointer to jump-start a 12-0 run by Bowling Green over the next three minutes.

That allowed the Falcons to cruise to a 36-17 halftime lead as BG shot 58.3 percent from the field in the first period, making five-of-eight 3-point attempts.

It didn’t take long for Bowling Green to build a 42-21 lead at the 17:21 mark of the second half, and the Falcons eventually led by as many as 32 points before settling on the final margin.

Bowling Green, which is part of a four-way tie for first place in the MAC’s East Division along with Akron, Buffalo, and Miami, will host the RedHawks at the Stroh Center Thursday starting at 7 p.m.
