Calhoun tallies 11 as Bowling Green suffers road loss at Akron 67-50

AKRON — The Bowling Green State University men’s basketball team suffered a 67-50 loss to Akron at the JAR Arena Saturday.

Richaun Holmes finished with a career-high 15 points and added eight rebounds while A’uston Calhoun scored 11 points for the Falcons, who fell to 10-15 overall and 5-7 in the Mid-American Conference.

Holmes blocked four shots in the contest and now has 62 this year, a single-season school record.

Zeke Marshall led four players in double figures for the Zips (21-4, 12-0) with 15 points. Alex Abreu and Nick Harney each scored 13 while Brian Walsh added 10.

Akron now has won 17 straight and is 13-0 at home this year.

Bowling Green struggled offensively early in the game. BG did not score until Calhoun made a free throw at the 13:30 mark of the first half, and by that point Akron had nine. The Falcons’ first field goal came on a Calhoun jumper with 11:35 left in the period, and that made the Zips’ lead 11-3.

A pair of free throws by Holmes brought BG within three at 14-11 with 6:60 to play, but Akron managed to push its lead to 29-21 at halftime.

The Zips led by 11 points at several points early in the second half, but a 7-2 run by the Falcons cut their deficit to 44-38 with 13:35 on the clock.

A Calhoun basket at the 5:31 mark brought Bowling Green to within 55-49 with 5:31 remaining, but Akron made 10 free throws in a row in the final three minutes to fuel a 12-1 finish that sealed the victory.

Bowling Green’s next two games will be non-conference contests. The Falcons host New Orleans at the Stroh Center Thursday starting at 7 p.m., and BG then plays a BracketBuster contest at IPFW Saturday at 7 p.m.

BG finalizes details for game vs. Buffalo

BOWLING GREEN — BG announced an official date and time for its final regular-season home game against Buffalo. The Falcons will host the Bulls on Friday, March 8 with tipoff set for 6 p.m.

Previously Bowling Green could not set a date or time for the game because the contest was under consideration for broadcast on the Mid-American Conference’s television packages with ESPN and SportsTime Ohio.
