Off duty sheriff's deputy shoots robbery suspect in Point Place

Five men and two women have been charged by Toledo Police Department officials for their involvement in an early morning attempted burglary at a residence in Point Place.

Andrew Short, 18, of Starr Avenue, has been charged with conspiracy to commit burglary and aggravated robbery.

Six people have been charged with conspiracy to commit burglary as accomplices. Michael Stowe Jr., 22, of Maumee Western Avenue in Monclova; Joshua Druyor, 18, of Oak Street; Jenna Oliver, 19, of Akron Street; Brook Wilkes, 20, of Forsythe Street; and two juveniles, Kenneth Cornett, 16, and Vince Dinkins,17.

Police said an off-duty Lucas County sheriff's deputy was letting his dog outside around 1:20 a.m. and was standing in the doorway of his garage, in the 2600 block of 119th Street, when he noticed two men approaching. Two cars were also parked in front of his house.

Deputy Daniel Hannon took his duty handgun from his vehicle in the garage and put it in his back pocket, according to police. A police report states that Mr. Short “did pull a black shirt over his face” and pointed a gun at the deputy.

After the deputy identified himself and ordered Mr. Short to drop his weapon, the latter told him to raise his hands. The deputy fired a single shot and the man attempted to flee the scene. Mr. Short was taken to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center, with a gunshot wound to his abdomen, Toledo police said. Police said his injury was “non-life threatening.”

Mr. Hannon called 911 and reported the incident. Officers stopped two vehicles a short time later at Summit and 116th streets and found the group of people allegedly connected to the crime.

Toledo police Lt. Mark King said all six were charged because they were all on the scene and involved in the burglary.

“They were in separate vehicles,” he said. “There were two cars that we stopped – a female driving each car.”

Lieutenant King said all seven involved “admitted that they were casing the residence to commit burglaries.”
