Owens advances to tourney title game

PORT HURON, Mich. - No. 1-ranked Owens Community College advanced to the championship game of the St. Clair Community College Holiday Tournament with an 80-71 victory over previously undefeated Genesee Community College last night.

Genesee (4-1), ranked No. 10 nationally in the NJCAA Division II poll, had the game's two high scorers in Shawn Levert and Jason Cornute, with 21 points apiece.

But the Express (9-0) countered with balance as Jeremy King (16 points), Doug Whiteman (13 points, 6 assists), Lamont Ellis (11 points, 4 steals) and Rodney Hughes (10) all scored in double digits.

The Express plays Fanshaw College (14-2) of London, Ont., for the championship today at 3 p.m. Fanshaw defeated host St. Clair 62-50 last night.
