Toledo's Jackson among top 100 Big Ten icons
Toledo native Jim Jackson was among the 100 athletes selected as candidates for Big Ten Icons, a show on the Big Ten Network which will reveal the top 50 beginning this fall.
Big Ten Icons, a 20-episode series hosted by legendary sports broadcaster Keith Jackson, will debut Sept. 18. New episodes every Tuesday will continue the countdown with the No. 1 icon revealed around the 2011 Big Ten men's basketball tournament.
The top-50 list and the order are being determined by a panel of on-air talent, network executives, conference officials, and long-time Big Ten observers, based on each individual's Big Ten playing career.
Joining Jackson in the top 100 preliminary list are Ohio State's Keith Byars (football), Cris Carter (football), Howard “Hopalong” Cassady (football), Eddie George (football), Archie Griffin (football), John Havlicek (basketball), Jerry Lucas (basketball), Jack Nicklaus (golf), Greg Oden (basketball), Jesse Owens (track), Orlando Pace (football), Katie Smith (basketball), Troy Smith (football), Chris Spielman (football).
Michigan candidates include Jim Abbott (baseball), Tom Brady (football), Anthony Carter (football), Gerald Ford (football), Tom Harmon (football), Desmond Howard (football), Barry Larkin (baseball), Glen Rice (basketball), Jalen Rose (basketball), Cazzie Russell (basketball), Charles Woodson (football).
