BGSU completes class of recruits

BGSU completes class of recruits

BOWLING GREEN — The Bowling Green State University football team has completed their class of 2017 recruits, signing 20 players today to join four early enrollees.

The group includes five offensive linemen, including two from junior colleges, as well as five defensive linemen.

All 20 players had signed with BG by 11:30 a.m., joining two greenshirts — quarterback Jarret Doege and wide receiver Matt Wilcox — as well as two junior-college early enrollees, wide receiver Datrin Guyton and safety Fred Garth.

Locally, offensive lineman Zach Dziengelewski of Swanton has signed with the Falcons. And Springfield High School product Lamar Witcher will be a preferred walk-on this fall.

Andrew Clair

A 5-9, 180-pound running back from Saint Louis University High School who last year ran for 1,656 yards and 18 touchdowns. Clair was a three-time All-Metro Catholic Conference pick who last year was named to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Super 30 team. Clair was a three-year starter for the Junior Bills who ran for 678 yards as a sophomore and 1,303 yards as a junior.

Calvin Clater

A 6-3, 190-pound wide receiver from South Hills High School in Fort Worth, Texas who caught 23 passes for 480 yards and six touchdowns as a senior. On defense Clater finished with 23 tackles, four interceptions and five passes broken up. Clater helped lead the Scorpions to a 10-0 regular-season record.

Kholbe Coleman-Abrams

A 6-0, 215-pound linebacker from Birmingham, Ala., who led Hoover High School to a 7A state title in 2016. Coleman-Abrams was named MVP of the 7A title game as he posted seven tackles and a sack while he and his teammates limited McGill-Toolen High School to minus-43 yards rushing thanks to nine sacks. Coleman-Abrams earned All-Alabama and All-Birmingham honors as well.

Shermond Dabney

A 6-0, 185-pound cornerback from Orchard Lake, Mich., St. Mary’s Preparatory who helped lead the Eaglets to back-to-back Division 3 state titles. Dabney is a three-sport standout at St. Mary's who also wrestled and ran track. As a wrestler, Dabney finished eighth at 171 pounds in Division 2; in track he finished fourth in the 110 hurdles and third in the 300 hurdles while running a leg on the Division 2 state champion 4x200 relay.

Colin DeBord

A 6-1, 190-pound wide receiver from Centerville, Ohio, who also played quarterback for the Elks as a senior. DeBord posted 800 receiving yards as well as 800 passing yards this past season. As a junior DeBord caught 30 passes for 500 yards and 11 touchdowns. In track last spring DeBord anchored the Centerville 4x100 relay team to a second-place finish in the Division I state meet.

Jarret Doege

A 6-2, 195-pound quarterback from Lubbock, Texas, who threw 3,363 yards and 33 touchdowns at Cooper High School. Doege led the Pirates to a 9-3 record and the semifinals in Class 5A Division 2 Regional 1. As a junior Doege, the younger brother of BG wide receivers coach Seth Doege, threw for 2,122 yards and 22 touchdowns with just five interceptions to lead the Pirates to the Class 5A district title. Doege, who is currently enrolled at BG, played basketball at Cooper as a junior and was named all-district second team.

Derek Downs

A 6-7, 305-pound offensive lineman from Westerville, Ohio, North High School. Downs played on both sides of the ball for the Warriors this season and received all-district honors on offense. Downs was named All-Central District second team in Division II.

Zach Dziengelewski

A 6-4, 275-pound offensive lineman who played for nearby Swanton High School. Dziengelewski was named first team All-District as an offensive lineman in Division V and was second-team All-Ohio. As a junior Dziengelewski was named second team all-district in D-V after leading the Bulldogs to an NWOAL title. Dziengelewski was named first team All-NWOAL on offense and second team on defense as a senior; his junior year he was second-team all-league on offense. Dziengelewski also lettered in basketball and was a two-team team captain.

Fred Garth

A 6-1, 190-pound safety who spent two seasons at Northwest Mississippi Community College in Senatobia, Miss. This past season Garth finished with 81 tackles and had two interceptions as well as five passes broken up. He did not play in 2014, but in 2013 Garth finished third for the Rangers with 52 tackles, including 39 solo stops, while breaking up five passes and forcing two fumbles. As a senior at Amory High School in Amory, Miss., in 2013, Garth had 51 tackles, two interceptions and three fumble recoveries on defense while running for 436 yards and five touchdowns on offense.

Matthew Guevremont

A 6-4, 300-pound offensive lineman from Pickering, Ont., who spent the past two seasons at Chabot College in California. Guevremont was a first-team all-conference choice in 2015 while leading the Gladiators to a 9-3 record and a win in the Bulldog Bowl. In 2016 Guevremont was named first team Region I All-California.

Datrin Guyton

A 6-5, 190-pound wide receiver from Manor, Texas, who originally signed with Oregon State but played last season for Copiah-Lincoln Community College in Wesson, Miss. Guyton caught 31 passes for 471 yards and three touchdowns for Copiah-Lincoln in 2016. As a redshirt freshman at Oregon State in 2015, Guyton caught 14 passes for 178 yards before he was dismissed from the team after eight games. Guyton was named Class 4A second team all-state in 2013 as a senior at Manor High School after catching 44 passes for 1,058 yards and 14 touchdowns. Guyton also had three more touchdowns on kickoff returns.

Walter Haire

A 6-3, 235-pound defensive line whose senior year at North Central High School in Indianapolis was cut short by injury. Haire also wrestled at North Central and advanced to semi-states as by a sophomore and junior.

Tyree Jackson

A 6-4, 260-pound defensive lineman from Jones High School in Orlando, Fla. who played on the varsity all four years. Jackson was named to the Orlando Sentinel's Super 60 as a senior after leading the Tigers to a 10-2 record. Jackson also was an Orange County/Metro All-Star as a senior. Jackson served as a team captain at Jones as a junior and senior.

Travis Koontz

A 6-5, 235-pound tight end from Boardman High School who was a member of the Spartans state championship team as a freshman. Koontz was named to the All-Northeast Inland District first team as a senior and was a Division II All-Ohio special mention pick. Koontz also played varsity basketball at Boardman.

Caylon May

A 6-2, 290-pound defensive lineman from Rich Central High School in Olympia Fields, Ill. May led the Olympians to an 8-4 record and the second round of the Illinois Class 5A state playoffs last season. May was named All-Southland Athletic Conference first team as a senior.

Cedric Mitchell

A 6-2, 180-pound defensive back from Concord High School in Goshen, Ind. Mitchell was a Class 5A All-Indiana pick as a defensive back last season after posting 81 yards, three interceptions and two fumble recoveries. On offense Mitchell caught 20 passes for 554 yards and 10 touchdowns while running the ball 14 times for 84 yards and another score. As a junior he led the Minutemen with 65 yards and four interceptions while catching 26 passes for 613 yards.

Quintin Morris

A 6-3, 205-pound wide receiver who played for George Ranch High School in the Houston suburb of Richmond, Texas. His junior year the Longhorns went 16-0 and won the Class 5A Division I state title in a 56-0 blowout. Morris also is a highly regarded basketball player who has averaged 12.6 and 4.9 rebounds as a senior after averaging 12.7 points and 6.0 rebounds as a junior.

Jordan Murphy

A 6-5, 245-pound defensive lineman from Crestview High School in Columbiana, Ohio. Murphy was named third-team All-Ohio notice on the defensive line as a senior and special mention All-Ohio as a junior. In 2016 Murphy finished with 36 tackles, including 15 for loss, and two forced fumbles. As a junior Murphy set a school record with 29 tackles for loss and had 72 tackles overall.

Samuel Neverov

A 6-5, 288-pound offensive lineman Dublin Jerome High School in suburban Columbus. Neverov helped lead the Celtics to a 10-2 record, which was a school record for victories. Neverov was named All-Ohio second team as an offensive lineman in Division I and was first team all-Central District as well as first team All-OCC Cardinal.

Jerry Roberts

A 6-0, 225-pound linebacker who led Cathedral Prep in Erie, Pa., to a PIAA Class 4A state championship. Roberts led the Ramblers to a 27-20 victory over Imhotep Charter in the title game, finishing with 12 tackles, including 3.5 for loss. Roberts was named All-Pennsylvania Class 4A as a junior and senior and also was a District 10 All-Star both years. As a senior he finished with 90 tackles, including 11 for loss. As a junior he made 121 tackles, including 14 for loss, and added three sacks and two interceptions.

Jamari Rouse

A 6-1, 245-pound defensive lineman from Deerfield Beach, Fla., who led the Bucks to back-to-back 10-win seasons. Rouse finished with 10 tackles, including two sacks as a senior after posting 19 tackles with two sacks as a junior. Rouse was named second team All-Florida in Class 8A as a senior

Matthew Tanner

A 6-7, 345-pound offensive lineman who played his high school football at Jacksonville, Fla., Bishop Snyder Catholic and then played two seasons at Eastern Arizona Junior College. Last season at Eastern Arizona, Tanner was named second team All-Western States Football League and second team All-Arizona Community College Athletic Conference.

Matt Wilcox

A 5-10, 185-pound wide receiver from Wayne High School in Dayton, Wilcox already is enrolled at Bowling Green. In his career at Wayne, Wilcox caught 188 passes for 2,525 yards and helped his team posted a 49-6 record. Wilcox caught 43 passes for 512 yards and three TDs; as a junior he caught 58 passes for 753 yards and nine TDs; as a sophomore he caught 53 passes for 807 yards and eight TDs. Wilcox also made 59 tackles as a senior and was named first-team all-Greater Western Ohio Conference, first team All-Southwest District (as a defensive back) and third-team All-Ohio in Division I (also as a defensive back). The Dayton Daily News named Wilcox its defensive player of the year as a senior.

Darius Wortham

A 6-0, 170-pound defensive back who played at Trotwood-Madison High School in suburban Dayton, Wortham helped lead the Rams to a 12-3 record and a berth in the Division III state title game. In 2015 he helped Trotwood-Madison reach the Division III state semifinals.
