Referee pleads guilty over gun at school

Bag with weapon inside stolen from locker

A basketball referee who acknowledged having a handgun in a bag that was stolen from a locker at Sylvania Southview High School, where he was working, entered a plea Tuesday in Lucas County Common Pleas Court.

Darrel Phillips, 46, of Toledo pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of illegal conveyance of a deadly weapon or dangerous ordnance in a school safety zone. The charge was amended from a fifth-degree felony as part of a plea agreement.
