Wood County settles discrimination lawsuit

BLADE STAFF

BOWLING GREEN — The Wood County Sheriff's Office and a Perrysburg woman who sued the county over job discrimination have settled the dispute.

Debra Ramey's complaint, filed last year, was dismissed July 27 in U.S. District Court, a day after the two sides met for a settlement conference.

Ms. Ramey had claimed a job offer she had received from the sheriff's office was rescinded and "a substantially younger, nondisabled female" with no prior experience was hired. Ms. Ramey alleged she was discriminated against because she was 50 years old and a breast-cancer survivor.

Wood County Administrator Andrew Kalmar said Wednesday that the sheriff's office has hired Ms. Ramey to fill a newly vacant dispatching position. The two sides are to split the court filing fee, he said, but no punitive damages will be paid.
