Maumee doctor faces March trial in drug case

A Maumee cardiologist charged with multiple counts of illegal drug possession and drug trafficking will have a March 25 trial date in Lucas County Common Pleas Court.

Barry P. DeRan appeared before Judge Gene Zmuda Wednesday. The doctor is charged with 15 counts each of aggravated possession of drugs and aggravated trafficking in drugs, each a second-degree felony punishable by up to eight years in prison.

Dr. DeRan is accused of having improperly prescribed pain medication to either people he knows or those referred to him.
