Sentence shortened for ex-Lucas Co. deputy

Judge David A. Katz of U.S. District Court has agreed to shorten the time a former Lucas County deputy sheriff must spend on supervised release from prison.

Jay Schmeltz, who served one year in prison for falsifying a document related to the death of a jail inmate in 2004, was to have spent two years on supervised release, but asked the court last week to terminate his supervised release after just one year.

Despite opposition by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Judge Katz this week said he would “grant the motion in part,” terminating supervised release for Schmeltz on June 14.
