4 local baseball players among Heidelberg College honorees

Four area high school graduates will be among the members of the 2007 Heidelberg College baseball team honored when their Ohio Athletic Conference regular-season championship rings are presented during the halftime of Heidelberg's Feb.16 basketball game with Otterbein.

Those honored include Matt Decker and Steve Decker from Springfield High School, Alex Rutter from Bowling Green High School, and Steve Calevro from Perrysburg.

Matt Decker finished his Heidelberg career by hitting .377 for the season, second-best on the squad. He stole 14 bases in 16 attempts. He hit .446 in OAC competition.

Steve Decker hit .273, appearing in nine games. He was .667 in the two conference games in which he appeared.

Rutter finished his career at Heidelberg with a number of honors. He was an all-academic OAC choice, won the Clyde Lamb scholar-athlete award, and was all-region MVP. The first baseman was a first-team selection for the OAC and was third team all-mideast region.

He batted .360 and started all 44 games for Heidelberg. His 44 RBI led the team. In the field he had 319 putouts with a .986 fielding average. Rutter hit .500 in his 18 conference games.

Calevro, a senior pitcher, got the save as the Orange team won the final game of Heidelberg's annual Fall World Series this fall.

Last spring, he was 6-1 as Heidelberg finished 28-15 and captured the Ohio Athletic Conference championship.

He had a 5.20 ERA and struck out 18 and walked 22 batters in 45 innings. Calevro returns this season along with sophomore Steve Decker, a catcher-infielder.

Freshmen on this season's roster include Sylvania Northview's Brian Koehl, a pitcher, and Derek Andrzejczak, an infielder.
