FirstEnergy Corp., the Akron parent of Toledo Edison Co., said yesterday it will hire up to 3,000 utility workers in the next three years in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.
Most of the hires will replace skilled and experience workers expected to retire in the next few years, the firm said. About 1,600 of the hires are expected this year and next.
Executives said the company is taking the step to enable new employees time to work with experienced colleagues. The company employs 13,000 in the three states.
FirstEnergy will hire for just about every operation, including engineering, finance, dispatching, information-systems, line, and technical jobs, said spokesman Ellen Raines.
She said the firm cannot forecast how many new jobs will be offered in the Toledo Edison region of northwest Ohio, which includes the Davis-Besse nuclear power plant near Oak Harbor.
