UT union asks state to overturn job cuts

A union that represents nonteaching and support personnel at the University of Toledo has filed five appeals with the state person|nel board of review to try to prevent some vacant bargaining-unit positions from being abolished.

The board in Columbus received the appeals from Communications Workers of America Local 4530.

The union contends the positions are in areas that are understaffed, and the university did not abolish them for reasons allowed by state law, such as efficiency of operation. It maintains one of the positions is not vacant, but rather filled by a member who has been on Workers' Compensation.

University officials, who de|clined comment on details of the appeals, have said the cuts were necessitated by fiscal constraints.
