Engineers' anticipation

Junior Ciera Ward can barely watch while professional engineer Stuart C. Salmon prepares to put a weight on her balsa-wood bridge to test it at Notre Dame Academy. Students in Mr. Salmon s engineering class were given a limited amount of balsa with which to design and build a bridge no more than 19 inches long and three inches high. Mr. Salmon then made sure yesterday that they would hold 10 pounds. Notre Dame has added the engineering class to its curriculum because it s a high-demand career, and women currently comprise only about 11 percent of the nation s engineers.
