Toledo Public Schools remained in the "continuous improvement" category for another year, but more of its schools fell into the lowest category of "academic emergency," according to state education report cards released Friday morning.

Perrysburg and Sylvania districts were among those that dropped one notch from the highest level over last year. Lake Local Schools, now facing a challenging future since a June tornado destroyed the high school, received the "excellent with distinction," joining only Ottawa Hills and Springfield Local Schools as the northwest Ohio districts with that top honor.

The Ohio Department of Education released figures of the 2009-2010 report cards for the more than 600 districts in the state.

Nine TPS schools — an increase from seven last year — were in the lowest "academic emergency" category.

Pickett Elementary School remained in "academic emergency."

"We had growth in both reading and math at Pickett, but obviously we still have a lot of work to do,' said Jim Gault, interim chief academic officer.

Leverette, Jones, and Robinson middle schools were also in the lowest category.

On the brighter side, Birmingham School, a kindergarten through eighth grade school, notched up two spots from "continuous improvement" to "excellent," and Sherman Elementary moved up from the lowest category to "academic watch."

As a district, TPS has been in the same "continuous improvement" category for the past three school years, according to historical data.

In contrast, Cincinnati this year became the first urban Ohio school district to reach one notch above into the "effective" category.

In the excellent category are Perrysburg, Maumee, Sylvania, Anthony Wayne, Rossford, Washington Local, Bowling Green, and Eastwood Local schools.

Oregon and Findlay were listed as "effective."

The report lists 81 districts with the top rating of "Excellent with Distinction."

In the state, 215 districts are listed as excellent, 240 effective, 64 continuous improvement, nine are listed as "academic watch," and one as "academic emergency," (Youngstown City Schools), according to the preliminary report.
