Oregon Board of Education considers putting renewal levy on May primary ballot

The Oregon Board of Education today took the first step toward placing a renewal of the school district's 2-mill permanent improvement levy on the May 7 primary election ballot.

The five-year tax expires at the end of the year and generates $1.74 million that the district has used, among other purposes, to improve the energy efficiency of its buildings. The Lucas County Auditor will calculate the exact millage needed to yield that same amount given the change in real estate valuations.

Board President Patrick Kapfhammer emphasized that the millage would cost taxpayers no more than it currently does. Those figures were not available late today.

Another board vote will be required to place the millage request on the ballot. Voters approved the levy in November of 2008.
