Bedford board looks to put levy on next year’s ballot

The Board of Education plans to put a renewal of the district’s sinking-fund levy on the ballot next year at a yet-to-be decided date.

The five-year, 0.5-mill levy pays for permanent improvements, such as building repairs and upgrades, but cannot be used for operational expenses. It generates about $527,000 annually and expires at the end of this year.

Waiting until next year means the district could not start collecting revenue from the tax until 2015, but the action would enable it to save the $15,000 to $20,000 cost of a special election by scheduling it on a general-election date, spokesman Sandy Kraine said.

The board also prefers to wait until the new superintendent, Mark Kleinhans, is on the job, Ms. Kraine said, and wants to see if pending state legislation to allow broader use of sinking-fund money is enacted.

Board members discussed the issue at its committee-of-the-whole meeting last week.
