Central Catholic to let 10 employees go

The president of Central Catholic High School said today that out of 108 school employees, 10 will not have their contracts renewed for the 2013-14 school year.

Tom Maj said he informed employees of the school last week that he would be meeting with them to discuss the financial issues the school is facing.

"I felt that meeting with each staff member (those we can retain and those we cannot) was important to establish trust," he said. "I'm also of the mind these decisions must be made face-to-face, out of respect."

Mr. Maj said the decisions regarding the non-renewal of contracts resulted from many factors, including an anticipated decrease in enrollment.

"Over the years, Central Catholic has enjoyed relatively small class sizes and staffing for a larger population than the 926 we just finished the school year with," he said. "Our revenue comes from tuition, thus as enrollment declines, so does our revenue."

He said the school anticipates an enrollment between 840-880 next year.

Mr. Maj said a committee has worked to determine the number of staff members the school needs to "maintain an integrated, quality educational program for the students."

Mr. Maj said he started conversations with staff members today and hopes to be done by Wednesday afternoon.
