The Stop & Go on Airport Highway in Toledo is one of many area stations that cut gasoline prices far below $3 a gallon Sunday.
Gas prices continued to dip Sunday, diving into $2.77-a-gallon territory at some Toledo stations.
The lower prices drove customers to a Speedway station at Holland-Sylvania Road and West Central Avenue in Sylvania Township. The posted price of $2.779 a gallon caught passing motorists’ attention.
“If I can get it under $3, I’m excited,” said Jim Seegert, 52, of Petersburg, Mich.
He pulled into the station to fill up a Jeep, and said he recently saw gas prices around Dundee, Mich., in the $2.90 range.
Prices have been on a downward slide. The average Toledo cost around 5:30 p.m. Sunday was $3.021 a gallon, according to prices logged by users of the online tracking Web site gasbuddy.com. The site reported Toledo prices averaged $3.345 a gallon a week ago. Some Toledo stations Wednesday dropped prices just under $3 a gallon.
Across Ohio, Sunday’s gas prices on gasbuddy.com averaged roughly a dime more than the day’s local average.
Gas prices have declined across the country as demand remains low and inventories stay high, a AAA Northwest Ohio spokesman said last week. She said nationwide demand is expected to increase somewhat during the holiday travel season but then stay low after the new year.
Scott Goetz, 48, of Ottawa Lake took advantage of the lower cost to fill a 100-gallon tank he keeps in the back of his truck. He uses the tank to fuel his lawn mowers and vehicles, and he keeps an eye on a handful of stations where he knows gas is usually less expensive. He purchased a midgrade gas for $2.879 gallon on Sunday.
“It just doesn’t seem like it’s going to be a lot cheaper,” he said. “In the next couple of days, I bet it goes up.”
