Joe Paterno: A look back

Joe Paterno, who racked up more wins than anyone else in major college football but was fired from Penn State amid a child sex abuse scandal has died. He was 85. Paterno's son Scott announced Nov. 18 that his father was being treated for lung cancer, which was diagnosed in mid-November during a follow-up visit for a bronchial illness.

Local players make finals in International Silver Stick Tournament

The Squirt AA Toledo Cherokee hockey team represented Northwest Ohio and this region of the United States by participating in the International Silver Stick Tournament held in Sarnia, Ontario January 20-22, 2012. They beat Hershey Jr. Bears, London Jr. Knights, Bluewater Sharks, and Missassauga Jets before meeting Nickel City Rebels from Sudbury, Ontario in the finals. After being tied 1-1 through 3 periods, the Cherokee fell in overtime losing 2-1. Two players from the Toledo team were named to the International All Star Tournament Team. Jase Sofo, Defenseman from Sylvania and Forward Andrew St. Julian from Oregon. A team can only be invited to this international tournament by winning a regional Silver Stick Tournament. Toledo Cherokee Squirt AA team won their regional tournament held in Dayton, Ohio in December beating teams from Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Ohio. The Toledo Cherokee Squirt AA team is coached by Steve Dickinson, Joe Sofo, and Toby Hafner.
