Toledo Magazine: Still Connected to Canal History

Commuters travel through Maumee and Toledo via the Anthony Wayne Trail daily by the thousands. But chances are few realize that the road they drive on was once the Miami & Erie Canal. Built between 1825 and 1845, the 301-mile canal stretched from Toledo to Cincinnati and strengthened the economic power of Ohio by allowing the easy transportation of goods. Sylvania Mayor Craig Stough, recipient of the St. Francis Award, Sister Diana Lynn Eckel, congregational minister for the Sisters of St. Francis of Sylvania, and Gayle Lampkowski, chief financial officer for the Sylvania Franciscans and recipient of the St. Clare Award, stand with their icons in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, the founder of the Franciscan Order, and St. Clare, a follower of Francis and founder of the Poor Sisters of San Damiano.

The 12th annual Sylvania Franciscan Gala "Dancing Under the Stars" was Sept. 24, 2011, at the Franciscan Center at Lourdes University and raised $70,000. A Night to Remember "Playbill," held Sept. 23, 2011, at the Valentine Theatre by Mercy St. Vincent and Mercy Children's Hospital Foundations, raised nearly $250,000 for patient and family programs and services.
