From Plant to Plate: Preserving Your Fresh Local Produce, will be the topic at 7 p.m. Monday at the Sylvania Branch Library's meeting room, 6749 Monroe St. in Sylvania. Lee Richter of the Ohio State University Extension, Lucas County, will give an overview of techniques such as canning, freezing, and drying fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs. The session is free. A Northern Ohio Vegetable Crops Field Night will be 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, at 1165 CR 43, Fremont. Discussed will be trap cropping to manage beetles and bacterial wilt on muskmelons, grafting tomatoes and their use in industry, worms and biocontrol on cabbage, and insect update/thrip trials on cabbage. It will be at the Ohio Agriculral Research and Development Center's North Central Agricultural Research Station, a 105-acre research farm on sandy loam and clay loam soils. Interested in becoming a Master Gardener in 2013? Applications will be given at a mandatory informational meeting offered at 2 and 7 p.m. Aug. 22 at the conference center of the Toledo Botanical Garden, 5403 Elmer Dr. This is the only place where applications will be distributed. The session will describe the program, classes, and times, required commitment, application process, fingerprints, and background check, as well as course fees. Class sizes are limited.
