Gill paces Anthony Wayne to district crown
TIFFIN - Becky Gill pitched and batted Anthony Wayne to a 6-3 victory over Mansfield Madison yesterday in a Division I district softball championship game.
Gill (20-3) gave up nine hits but fanned nine and walked no one. She also went 4-for-4 as the Generals had 10 hits, with two doubles, a triple and an RBI.
Madison (12-15) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second and was headed for more when AW center fielder Mel Heinlein gunned down a runner at the plate to end the inning.
In the bottom of the third, AW (23-3) put the game away with five runs.
A walk and a Madison error on a sacrifice put two runners on preceding one of Gill's doubles. Michelle Rairith singled home the second run, and a bunt single by Kim Vogtsberger loaded the bases. Gabrielle Chartier cleared them with a double to make the score 5-0.
The Generals tacked on a run in the sixth on a single by Taryn George, a sacrifice and Sam Kolling's RBI single. AW faces Whitmer at 5 p.m. Thursday in Clyde in a regional semifinal.
