Maumee Valley Country Day boys basketball coach Jim Robinson, who picked up his 500th career victory during this past season, is recovering from a stroke he suffered on May 31 while at the school.

Robinson's wife, Carol, said that her husband was in the right place when the stroke hit because he received immediate help and was quickly transported to University of Toledo Medical Center, formerly Medical College of Ohio.

The prompt treatment likely minimized a great deal of the potential damage, she said.

"Jim is coming along well and they are still regulating his medications," Carol Robinson said. "He's probably pretty lucky where he was, because they recognized that he was struggling and he was at the hospital within 15 minutes.

"We're really grateful, and we're hopeful of a full recovery. "If everything goes well, he should be able to come home by [today] or [tomorrow]."

Jim Robinson, 67, was just leaving an open-gym session at Maumee Valley and was speaking with another coach from the school and a parent of an athlete.

They noticed the 40-year coaching veteran struggling to speak and summoned help immediately. Robinson was aware of the problem and actually handed his cell phone to one of the men so they could call his wife.

Carol Robinson said her husband is mobile and able to walk.

Robinson's career has included head coaching stints at 10 schools.
